Jantzi Social Index Removes Nortel, Adds Yamana Gold

Jan 16, 2009
Today, Jantzi Research Inc. announced the following changes to the Jantzi Social Index®(JSI) effective as of the opening of the markets on January 16, 2009:

• Removed from the JSI: Nortel Networks Corporation (TSX:NT)
• Added to the JSI: Yamana Gold Corp. (TSX:YRI)

Nortel: Nortel was removed from the JSI because Nortel is entering bankruptcy proceedings.

Yamana Gold Corp.: Jantzi Research now recommends that Yamana Gold Inc. be considered eligible for SRI portfolios managed in accordance with a broad range of ESG criterion. Yamana Gold's ESG performance is relatively strong among its peers. The company's environmental, health and safety management systems are above average. Two of its seven wholly-owned mines have received certification of their EMS under the ISO 14001 standard and Yamana has targets in place for certification of the remaining mines. Only six of the 20 companies in its peer group on the TSX Composite Index have any of their mines certified under ISO 14001. Yamana is a signatory to the International Cyanide Management Code and one of the few Canadian mining companies that has set clear targets for reducing waste generation, as well as water and energy consumption. The company is also seeking to have its health and safety management system certified under the OHSAS 18001 standard at all of its sites.

Disclaimer: Company additions to and removals from the JSI® do not in any way reflect an opinion on the investment merits of the company.
