10 for 2020: Creating Impact Through Thematic Investing
About Sustainalytics’ 10 for 2020 Report
The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are playing an increasingly important role in shaping the sustainability roadmaps of investors, governments and civil society groups. In Sustainalytics’ thematic research report, 10 for 2020: Creating Impact Through Thematic Investing, we present investors with ten ESG investment themes that can positively contribute to advancing the SDGs. Our 10 themes fall under four broad categories:
We assess how 5G will create opportunities, from optimizing service delivery to enhancing the Internet of Things (IoT). The digitization of the mining industry also offers cost reductions and ESG value capture.
Our analysis finds connected medical device producers may benefit from the burgeoning IoT healthcare market, and opportunities are emerging to invest in apparel companies that implement slow fashion principles.
We examine how the new global sulphur cap for fuel oil will cost the shipping industry about USD 40-70bn in 2020 due to higher fuel and technology expenses. In addition, we look at banks that are factoring biodiversity risk into credit assessments.
Our research shows that growing concerns about the viability of high-carbon business models are leading some oil and gas majors to diversify into low-carbon products. Reinsurers are also addressing climate risk by readjusting premiums and using artificial intelligence in climate models.
