Morningstar Sustainalytics Submits ESMA Filing
Sustainalytics B.V. (Morningstar Sustainalytics) has informed the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) of its intention to continue providing ESG ratings under the European Union’s new regulatory framework for ESG rating providers. The company will subsequently submit an application to obtain authorization under the European Union’s ESG Rating Provider Regulation (2024/3005).
The ESG Rating Provider Regulation, a legal framework designed to enhance the transparency, integrity, and comparability of ESG ratings, applies from 2 July 2026. The Regulation requires ESG ratings providers operating within the EU to obtain authorization and be supervised by ESMA. The Regulation further establishes enhanced requirements in key areas, including governance, transparency, conflict-of-interest management, and methodology disclosure.
Morningstar Sustainalytics is committed to empowering investors and serving client needs through high-quality ESG research and data. The firm is engaging constructively with regulators as it prepares for compliance with the new framework and the associated registration process.
David Pagliaro, President of Morningstar Sustainalytics, commented: “For nearly 35 years we have been committed to advancing transparency and trust in sustainable investment. As regulatory expectations evolve, we welcome the opportunity to further strengthen the clarity and accessibility of our methodologies and disclosures for market participants.”
The firm will provide further updates as the process progresses.
